What Does a Liquidator Do?

A liquidator is a qualified insolvency practitioner who is appointed by the directors of an insolvent company to take control of the business and guide it through the liquidation process.

The liquidator stops the company from trading and has the responsibility of recovering any cash that can help to pay outstanding debts to creditors. This is done by selling company assets and property to raise ‘liquid’ cash.

The liquidator deals directly with any creditors, keeping them informed and involved in decisions when necessary. They also settle any legal disputes and outstanding contracts. The liquidator therefore takes much of the burden and stress from the shoulders of the directors.

The liquidator is also responsible for meeting any deadlines for submission of paperwork and keeping authorities informed of any updates.

Finally the liquidator will get the company removed from the Companies House register, which formally brings an end to the company.
